The cold front that has spawned the high winds will also cause temperatures to rapidly plummet from a few degrees above freezing to minus 5 to minus 10 or lower within the first hour or two after it goes through. Latest analyses show that rain is falling right up until the cold front blasts through. Then immediately in the wake of the front rain turns quickly over to snow. Thus some surfaces won’t have a chance to dry out before the temperature plunges below freezing in the wake of the front. Any untreated surface may very quickly become icy and very slippery as water suddenly freezes.

The strong cold westerly winds will be accompanied by extensive flurries and local snowsqualls where they blow off the great lakes. This will cause extensive reduced visibilities in blowing snow with whiteout conditions expected in many areas. Near blizzard conditions are also quite possible as the temperatures continue to plummet. Motorists and the public in general should exercise much extreme caution.
